Marieke Holst-Brenner
Marieke joined The Sandboxtel from the Hotel Kellerman in 2021. Before that, she spent twelve years with Aurelian hotelier group LHG, most recently running their Copenhagen flagship.
The Sandboxtel was built in 2019 as a modern reply to Aurelia's nineteenth-century grand hotels — broad colonnades, tall windows, a lobby that opens onto a garden, and a twelve-storey bronze-and-cream block that folds around an internal park.
In 2015, the City of Veldenbrug put forward the western gate site of Linderhoek Park for a hotel — with a tight brief: a landmark building, five-hundred-plus keys possible, but only in a form that kept the park visible, walked-into, and, for the ordinary resident of Linderhoek, still felt like theirs.
Atelier Vos & Kellerman won the tender in 2016 with the scheme that was built: a twelve-storey block set back from the park's west gate, lifted off the ground on a broad colonnade, and folded around an internal garden that opens directly through the lobby into the park beyond. The hotel opened on 14 September 2019 with three hundred and twelve rooms across seven categories.
The palette was fixed early: Linderhoek oak (from a nearby working forest), Aurelian travertine from the quarries north of Kellerman, brass-bronze cladding from a foundry outside Veldenbrug, and a warm cream Portland-lime render for the upper storeys. Everything in the building, except for the Byredo amenities and the Dammann tea, is sourced within two hundred kilometres.
A quietly ambitious building — unmistakably modern, unmistakably Aurelian — that understands the one thing a grand hotel still has to be: hospitable, at every hour.Dezeen · Hotel of the Year 2020
The Sandboxtel has 412 employees. Most of them work on the floor — at the front desk, in the dining rooms, in the kitchens, in the spa — and the hotel runs a year-round apprenticeship programme with the Linderhoek Culinary Institute, the Veldenbrug Hospitality College and the Aurelia School of Horticulture.

A former sous at Noma and In de Wulf, Astrid joined to open Verdant in 2019 and earned the restaurant's first Michelin star in 2023. Her tasting menu is planted, harvested and finished from the hotel's own garden.
Rafael has been at the door of the hotel since opening day in 2019, and was Head Concierge at the Aurelia Grand for fourteen years before that. Member of Les Clefs d'Or.
The Sandboxtel was designed to a BREEAM Outstanding certification and operates on 100% renewable electricity from the Aurelian grid. Full ESG and sustainability reports are published annually and available on request.
